Everything You Need to Know About… 2nd Bite for Cancer Research UK
All the details you need to enjoy an afternoon of fabulous food for a brilliant cause

Bite Back - the fine dining street food festival/fundraiser that made its debut in Newcastle last summer - returns to the city this June with 2nd Bite for Cancer Research UK.
Bringing together 20 Michelin-rated chefs from across the country to cook up street food with a fine dining twist, it's a must-do for any self-proclaimed foodie - and we've got all the info you need to know to make the most of its second edition.
What is 2nd Bite for Cancer Research UK?
It’s the second edition of Bite Back for Cancer Research UK – a food festival/fundraiser that is the brainchild of Sian and Cal Byerley from Restaurant Pine, the Northumberland restaurant that’s built a phenomenal reputation thanks to its stunning tasting menus.
Once again, they’ve assembled a crack team of incredible chefs from across the UK – all Michelin-rated and with plenty representing the North East – to prepare what they describe as “elevated street food”, with all proceeds going to Cancer Research UK to support their essential work.
Last year, the event raised a whopping £82,063 for the charity – and the organisers would love you to come along and help them raise even more this year!

When and where is it happening?
Bite Back for Cancer Research UK is taking place at the magnificent Wylam Brewery in Exhibition Park (something of a mainstay for Tyneside foodie events these days!) on Sunday 6th July, from noon to 4pm.
Which chefs are taking part?
Only some of the best culinary talents in the country! There’s Stuart Ralston, executive chef of Michelin-starred Edinburgh seafood restaurant LYLA and Great British Menu 2019 runner-up Samira Effa alongside Will Lockwood from York’s Roots and David Taylor of Grace & Savour fame, who both took part last summer.
Geordie foodies will be happy to learn that plenty of the North East’s best chefs are on the line-up too. Newcastle’s own Kenny Atkinson – the chef behind the city’s only Michelin-starred restaurants, House of Tides and Solstice – also makes a welcome return for the second edition, as do Alex Nietosvuori from Northumberland’s Hjem and – of course – co-organiser Cal Byerley from Restaurant Pine.
Each chef will cook up one dish – their own unique, Michelin-level take on street food – with 500 portions of their dish available on the day. Check out the full chef line-up at the 2nd Bite website.

How do I get tickets?
Tickets aren’t necessary as admission to Wylam Brewery is free, but you will need to purchase tokens to enjoy the food. Tokens are priced at £10 and available to buy via the 2nd Bite website.
How many tokens will I need?
The dishes being served are roughly the size of a starter portion so the organisers suggest 5-6 tokens would be ideal to make sure you get to taste as many great dishes as possible.
Will vegetarian, vegan and allergen-free dishes be available?
Because each chef is only preparing one dish, it won’t always be possible to provide vegetarian and allergen-free alternatives in every case. However, there will be plenty of vegetarian and gluten-free options available, but no vegan dishes unfortunately.

Is it kid and dog-friendly?
Both kids and dogs are more than welcome to attend!
What else is happening?
Wylam Brewery’s DJs will be on hand to get the good vibes going as you dine on some of the most delicious street food in the world and there’s an online auction with some fantastic prizes up for grabs including a stay-and-dine experience at chef Simon Rogan’s farm in the Cartmel Valley and a voucher for two people to enjoy a class at Blackfriars Cookery School here in Newcastle. Check out the full 2nd Bite auction lot list and get bidding!
Perhaps the only thing better than eating really great food is eating really great food for a fantastic cause – and that’s exactly what 2nd Bite for Cancer Research UK is all about, so get those tokens booked and let’s help raise even more money this year!
