Following a record number of participants last year, the biggest half marathon in the UK returns to the Toon this September for an incredible celebration of the North East!

ON YOUR MARKS, GET SET... GO!

We’re celebrating the SimplyHealth Great North Run in style this year! Complete with incredible city-centre sightseeing and exclusive invitations to delicious dining destinations throughout the day, fasten those laces and check out our guide to the hottest race in town!

SUNDAY 8 SEPTEMBER 2018

All the training and preparations come to an end as the famous race takes place on Sunday 8th September! With over 50,000 participants expected to take part, the GNR races through the city streets as runners tackle the 13.1 mile journey to the coast in South Shields!

Four-time Olympic gold medallist Sir Mo Farah returns to the North East as he bids to win an unprecedented sixth consecutive Great North Run. Having sealed his fifth title with a scorching time of 59.26 in 2018, make sure you keep an eye out for Sir Mo as he aims to lead the chasing pack across the line!

If you’re not running the event, there are plenty of opportunities to see your loved ones take part on the day. Wave them off from the Town Moor, scream and shout as you line the route, or soak up the electric atmosphere down on the Quayside!

After cheering on the runners, why not wander down to the Quayside and rest those legs with delicious dishes and thirst-quenching beverages? Enjoy a refreshing lunch at Pitcher & Piano, treat yourself to homemade cakes at The Great British Cupcakery or enjoy a cold one at The Bridge Tavern! Delicious refreshments all accompanied with incredible views.

A bustling celebration, which will remind us - and the rest of the UK - why the North East is so great. Make sure you're a part of Toon history again as the Great North Run returns!
