The Best Shops for Vintage Lovers in NE1

As much as we love a day spent shopping the high street trends, we must admit there’s something cool about picking up a little something with a back story. Warm summer days are ideal for moseying and nosying around our favourite vintage shops.

One of Newcastle’s oldest vintage hotspots, Retro is bursting at the seams with one-of-a-kind pieces. It’s the kind of place you discover something new at every turn, and whether you’re looking for a new-to-you knit, or a stylishly quirky bit of bling, we challenge you not to come away with something. Split over two levels in its High Bridge Street store, it's one of the city centre’s coolest quarters and we can see how Retro has stood the test of time.

Looking for that laid-back Americana vibe? Then get yourself to Flip, pronto. The shop sources good-quality, original merch from the USA, so expect kitsch Hawaiian shirts, authentic sweatshirts and plenty of flawlessly faded denim. With a collection of old license plates and trendy mason jars on sale to boot, you can even grab a spot of home décor while you’re in there. Stateside style at its finest.

The Grainger Market has really upped the trend factor in recent years. Gone are the days of veg shopping with your gran, now you’re more likely to find artisan bakeries and independent shops jostling alongside local produce and craft. One such little gem is The Yesterday Society, a miniature treasure trove that we can’t get enough of. Amazing retro costume jewellery, cosy old woollies and a dazzling dress or two.

For the most dedicated vintage vixens out there, our next pick is a dream come true. Vintage at Number 18 specialises in wedding dresses from decades gone by, meaning you can look ravishingly retro on your big day. There’s no sifting through piles or racks, with every dress treated with love and care, meaning one thing: truly fabulous finds. The perfect day out with the bridesmaids!

So you’ve finally filled your boudoir to bursting point with tea dresses, peter pan collars and cool old band tees… don’t worry, the shopportunities aren’t quite finished! We reckon a bit of vintage décor never goes amiss, and we’ve found the perfect place to stock up. Ouseburn Antiques offers an eclectic mix of furniture and homeware. We’re on the hunt for a new wardrobe for all our fab finds…
