Support Local: The Newcastle Independents we’re supporting this year

Last updated:

Our independent city businesses are doing their bit to ensure you can still enjoy your favourite Toon stores from the comfort of your own home. Here are some of the lovely local folk we're shouting about this spring...

WACELAND

We may have stocked up on PJs and loungewear over the past 12 months, but Waceland’s decision to move their stellar streetwear range online has ensured we can bag cool garments and add a dash of style to our Friday big-shop! With 10% off your first purchase, a brand new sale section with some serious bargains and free delivery on orders over £75, you’d be mad not to bag one of their vintage Ralph Lauren tees or super rare Supreme hoodies this spring. The perfect spot to shop when it comes to planning your beer garden outfit!

LEAF

Established in 1978 and a stalwart name in the Toon’s tailoring scene in the past 40 years, Leaf Clothing is a family-run business and it’s a beautiful spot to shop local this spring. Boasting lovely collections from some of Europe's newest and most exclusive brands, Brian, Josie and team have moved their extremely friendly service online to keep us all looking dapper. With FaceTime and WhatsApp video appointments and local delivery available too, it’s outstanding service such as this that will keep Leaf Clothing around in the city for another 40 years! THE HOI POLLOI

The Hoi Polloi boys encapsulate everything we love about independent businesses here in the city. Arriving into the Toon back in March 2020, it’s fair to say that the team haven’t had it easy, but that hasn’t stopped Steve and the gang from making a lasting impact within NE1. Nestled over on Nun Street, The Hoi Polloi is a cool, contemporary barbershop that oozes personality, creativity and originality in abundance. Whether it be their recent foray into football fashion with their very own Nike x The Hoi Polloi shirt or their unwavering commitment to North East charities despite the pandemic, Steve and his team have continued to conjure up new services that’ll keep THP ahead of the game. Their latest venture is Alley Four Coffee; a side-door inside the barbershop that has been converted into a coffee hatch that serves Pink Lane Coffee to the residents of Newcastle. As you can probably tell, they’re much more than just a barbershop - but don’t just take our word for it, why not book an appointment from April 12th and see for yourself first hand what we’re on about?

UPSIDE DOWN PRESENTS

Their shop might not be open at the minute, but the mega folk and cool neighbours down at Upside Down Presents have ensured you can bag mint Geordie paraphernalia at any time thanks to their newly designed website! Currently chock full of local art, fine photography and tonnes of quirky keepsakes to put big smiles on the faces of loved ones, their new online store is simple, easy to use and brimming with special offers. It’s a small business offering big things to the people of NE1 and beyond. Keep checking in for the latest on new stock and potential added discounts on their homepage via the link below!

UNION CLOTHING

We all know the score with Union Clothing by now. This Newcastle icon has built a huge following over the years and their store on High Bridge is usually chock full of people trying to get their hands on killer threads and exclusive drops. While we’re chomping at the bit to get back inside and shop their gear, the Union gang have been keeping our fits fresh and our wardrobes stocked thanks to their speedy UK next working day delivery and click & collect service. A fabulous example of NE1 businesses adapting to the situation and keeping customers kitted out!

NIL LIVING

We love everything about Nil Living. The city's zero waste store has been a huge hit since opening a few years back, and they’ve pivoted to add a sustainable gift offering online for warmer months and beyond. A fab indie business in the Grainger Market, this lot offer beautiful everyday essentials with the planet in mind and their new ‘Back to School’ range online is simply superb. Open Monday - Saturday 8:30am - 5pm if you’re in the city, or for those further afield, you can check out their brilliant online shop via the link below!

RPM MUSIC

Who doesn’t love a mooch to RPM Music and a good ol’ flick through their LP’s? While we eagerly await another mooch over to This Old George Yard gem, we guess we’ll have to make do scrolling through their titles on Discogs; a nifty online store that allows record stores around the globe to sell music! RPM have painstakingly listed thousands of titles during the pandemic and they’re all available to purchase right now! How does it work we hear you ask? Well, all you have to do is follow the link below, search for your favourite LPs, add to basket and Bob’s your uncle - simple! Undoubtedly one of Newcastle’s longest running record stores that has been supplying the city’s DJs, dancers and groovers with thousands of record rarities for years, it’s brilliant to see that this iconic store is thriving in the modern age!
