One of the most delicious weeks of the year is upon us - British Pie Week! Who doesn’t love a beautifully crusted flaky pie, hiding their favourite filling inside? Luckily for you (and us), Newcastle is bursting with great places to get your pie fix between 4th – 10th March.

Get stuck into these irresistible offerings throughout the city and celebrate British Pie Week in style…

Red House Red House

Red House, Sandhill

This cosy Quayside hotspot has a reputation for some of the best pies in Newcastle! Adopting an "if it ain’t broke don’t fix it" attitude to their crusty delights, Red House’s menu is filled top-to-toe with mouthwatering traditional handmade pies. With everything from classic steak and Newcastle Brown Ale, to vegan-friendly sweet potato, chickpea and spinach, Red House is a pie lover’s dream! Perfectly pair your pastry with their signature creamy mash or thick-cut chips, choose your peas and your sauce, and you’ve got a meal made in comfort food heaven! What a delight!

The French Oven, Grainger Market

This award-winning artisan bakery in the Grainger Market isn’t all delicate pastries and sweet treats - they also do a mean range of magnifique homemade pies! Get your fork into flavourful fillings such as chicken balti, mince and mushy peas, and the proper Geordie slow-cooked steak and Newcastle Brown Ale. Despite this being a French-meets-English bakery, their scotch pie has been a best seller for years - who’d have thought it! Turns out they’re just really good at making pies with any filling they fancy.

Milligan's Bakery Milligan's Bakery

Milligans Bakery, Northumberland Street

For classic pies on the go, you simply can’t beat Milligans! This family-owned Geordie business has been selling delicious pies in Newcastle for over 60 years now. The Northumberland Street shop is the perfect place for a pie pick-me-up at lunch. Choose from chicken, minced beef, or steak and onion - they’re all equally lush!

Pink Lane Bakery Pink Lane Bakery

Pink Lane Bakery, Pink Lane

Pink Lane is one of the city’s most popular artisan bakeries, with shops in Pink Lane as well as Gosforth and Jesmond (and regular pop-ups across the city). Their whole menu is a taste sensation, including their pies: the line-up changes regularly but look out for their Steak & Newcastle Brown Ale.

Dicksons Dicksons

Dicksons, Grainger Street

For seventy years – and these days, across more than thirty stores – Dicksons have been providing the finest meat, pastries and deli food to the people of the north east and their pies are second to none. From minced beef and onion to pork pies and some very appealing family plate pies, Dicksons have all your pie needs covered.

City Tavern City Tavern

City Tavern, Northumberland Street

One of the city’s most popular pub / diners, the City Tavern is a genuine institution with a reputation for home-cooked food that far exceeds most pubs’ menus. Their list of pie options is short but ideal: chicken & bacon, pork & leek and steak & ale – all prepared on site and served with a variety of tasty sides.

The Victoria Comet The Victoria Comet

The Victoria Comet, Neville Street

From its prime location right outside Central Station, The Victoria Comet is a Newcastle institution (it was even featured in Get Carter) that does a lot of things just right, not least its food menu. And at the heart of the menu are pies: hand-crafted and with some tasty sides, they offer a couple of very tasty options – chicken and truffled oyster mushroom, and puy lentil and vegetable cottage pie.

We think pies are something we should enjoy all year round – tasty, filling and available in endless varieties all over the city – but if you need a reason to get stuck in, British Pie Week seems like a great one!
