125 Years of Newcastle United

Last updated:

This December, we’re celebrating 125 years of Newcastle United. On Saturday 9th December 2017, it will be 125 years to the day since we became a one-club city.

To mark the occasion, the Magpies will be taking on Leicester City on home turf at St. James’ Park. The game will be televised with a 5:30pm kick off as Newcastle United fans flock to the city to celebrate.

With a buzz throughout the city, you’ll find flags, banners and big screens showcasing historical content and the club’s importance across Newcastle City Centre and beyond. With flags for every fan throughout the stadium and a fantastic atmosphere throughout the city as a whole, it’s the perfect opportunity to burst with pride, get behind the team and celebrate 125 years of United.

In the run up to the 125th anniversary, fans can vote for their ‘Greatest XI'. Votes are open until 5th December - so make sure you have your say before Newcastle United's greatest ever team is revealed on the big day.

5 MINUTES WITH  BOB MONCUR

This December we’re celebrating 125 years of Newcastle United. NE1 catches up with Magpies legend and club captain of the late 1960s, Bob Moncur. He wore his black and white shirt with pride and now calls the city home.

What Newcastle means to me >>

I came here as a 15-year-old to seek fame and fortune (failed on the fortune bit). I arrived on a wet Monday morning by train (never the best way to approach Newcastle, bearing in mind as you approach by car you have the green fields of the Town Moor). And I thought to myself, what am I doing? 57 years later I would consider it a good call.

Eating out >>

There are so many nice places to eat in Newcastle. But this one is simple for my wife Camille and I - it has to be 21. We used to go to the original Cafe 21 on Queen Street and we are still regulars today.

My perfect occasion would be a few drinks in The Broad Chare followed by late lunch at 21, usually on a Sunday.

Family time >>

Our two kids are all grown up with three grandkids. But on school holidays we have for many years taken the troops to Piccolino, where grandson Sam says the garlic bread is the best in the Toon!

Me time >>

Crossing or viewing our magnificent bridges over the Tyne. How many cities can boast so many bridges
so close to the centre? Watching the Millennium Bridge open, with the Tyne Bridge in the background, takes a bit of beating.

Walking down both Grey Street and Dean Street, taking the time to feast your eyes on the magnificent architecture of the buildings above. Not to mention the choice of restaurants
and classy bars.

Festive fun in NE1 >>

For me, and for many others in the industry, Christmas is about family but it’s also about football. It is always a busy time over the festive period and my biggest enjoyment is spending a day at St James’ Park, involved in a match, albeit not playing anymore. St James’ Park is an iconic statue in the city, and allows so many loyal fans to let their feelings be known, good or bad.
