BJÖRN SÄFSTEN: FICTIONAL COPIES:
BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art in association with Dance City presents Fictional copies. Created during 2013 by choreographer Björn Säfsten, set and lighting design collective SUTODA and five performers. The performance examines the importance of photography in todays culture and how it has become a significant force in the development of our identity, how we present ourselves and interact with others. In a space that documents all actions, the audience and performers share a common space and in doing so are all asked to take responsibility for the events which are created within it. A multitude of images captured in the opening minutes flow into the rest of the performance and ask what is there to trust? Within the space the folding and manipulation of the images bends our trust in what we think is original. We are taken through a number of suggestions and scenarios that manipulate the way we perceive the images before us, and in doing so, question how we interpret the signs displayed. Björn Säfsten creates choreographic art in close collaboration with his current artistic team. Fictional copies is a development and continuation of the themes he has explored recently, in the critically acclaimed Introduction 2012 and a commission for Skånes Dansteater,...AND... 2013. He lives in Stockholm, Sweden.
