Blue/Orange: Northern Stage

This Event has passed

The play Blue / Orange centres on Christopher, a young Black man living in the UK. Christopher thinks oranges look blue; and believes he is the son of former Ugandan president Idi Amin. Does he have schizophrenia, or is he just culturally misunderstood? Should he be kept as a psychiatric inpatient, or is he better off going home? Who gets to decide?

Schizophrenia is a mental health condition. There is no definitive test for it. Diagnosis depends on an assessment by a mental health professional. It is characterised by a range of symptoms such as hearing voices or seeing things that other people do not, withdrawing from social situations, loss of motivation and difficulties with reasoning or paying attention. You are much more likely to be diagnosed with Schizophrenia if you are an immigrant… but no one really seems to know why.

Straw Bear presents Joe Penhall's extraordinary play about race, mental illness, medicine and power. In association with the Institute of Neuroscience, Newcastle University to celebrate Brain Awareness Week. A global initiative to make people more aware about the Brain.
