Diaries at the ready as we step into July and crank up the summer fun in NE1! Here's what you can look forward to this month...
WORLD CUP LIVE FROM TIMES SQUARE
Until Sunday 15 July
We're through the group stages and ready to take the World by storm... so don't miss out on all the footballing fun in NE1! World Cup 2018 Live From Times Square will see all the action unfold live on a big screen. The site can hold up to 2,500 people and is set to be the region’s largest beer garden as the summer sporting spectacular continues in Russia. Football fans can expect special treats including guest appearances, an artificial turf, craft ales, street food vendors and official merchandise stalls where you can go all out with shirts and scarves while flying flags and sounding klaxons!
WHEY ALE MAN - LOCAL BEER TASTING
Monday 2 July
As part of the Great Exhibition of the North Inspired By programme, Blackfrairs is hosting a special beer tasting night this July, during which guests will be given a chance to taste their way through a variety of the region’s best beers, brewed right here on our doorstep. Tipples will be washed down with plenty of homemade sourdough and you’ll also have the opportunity to enjoy 10% off a three-course set meal afterwards. Book us in!
WIMBLEDON 2018 LIVE AT SCREEN ON THE GREEN
From Monday 2 July
The strawberries are chopped, the Pimms is mixed and Wimbledon begins today with the King of the Lawns, Roger Federer, opening proceedings on Centre Court from 1pm. You can watch it all, live and free at Screen on the Green this summer with all the live action from London throughout July! Who needs tickets for the event when you can soak up the atmosphere at Old Eldon Square? We might be 300 miles north of Wimbledon, but there’s no missing out on this sporting spectacular in NE1 this summer!
THE PLAY THAT GOES WRONG
Monday 2 - Saturday 7 July
Multi award-winning West End smash-hit comedy, The Play That Goes Wrong, arrives at the Theatre Royal. The Cornley Polytechnic Drama Society are putting on a 1920s murder mystery, but as the title suggests, everything that can go wrong, does! As the accident-prone thespians battle on against all the odds to reach their final curtain call, hilarious results ensue. A brilliantly funny comedy that's guaranteed to leave you aching with laughter.
MANUFACTURING & ENGINEERING EXHIBITION
Wednesday 4 July
Manufacturing & Engineering returns to Newcastle’s Metro Radio Arena, bringing together more than 1,500 people for the leading showcase of innovation and technological developments in design engineering and manufacturing for the North of England. Presented in an exciting and dynamic environment, with a top-level conference, practical workshops and an exhibition packed with market-leading suppliers, it’s the place to be for industry professionals across the region to see new products and services, seek out high-quality business advice, and explore the latest technology.
RSC LIVE: ROMEO & JULIET
Wednesday 18 July
Literary-lovers are invited to Tyneside Cinema for a special interpretation of one of Shakespeare’s best-loved plays, Romeo and Juliet, from Royal Shakespeare Company. The famous story about two young lovers, ripped apart by the bitter divisions of their families, explodes with intense passion and an irresistible desire for change - but leads all too quickly to heartbreaking consequences. Expect a thrilling show.
NEWCASTLE PRIDE 2018
Friday 20 - Sunday 22 July
Pride is back! And it’s as vibrant as ever with a lively line-up of more pop stars and party people than ever before. As the headline sponsor, team NE1 are delighted to welcome this fabulous, feel-good family event back to the city, with its new location on Nuns Moor. This year’s theme is ’40 Years of Rainbow’, and will kick off on Friday night as the official Launch Party takes over Nuns Moor, giving guests a unique opportunity to see the Vengaboys live on stage.
THE LAKES GIN SUMMER COCKTAILS

Join the guys behind The Lakes Distillery at Malmaison for a night of cocktail-making. Discover the story behind one of the country’s best-loved distilleries, before having a go at making your own summer-inspired creations. You’ll also be treated to tasty canapés and learn all about what goes into some of the distillery’s best-loved gin cocktails, infused with the likes of Lakes’ Explorer Gin, Elderflower Liqueur and other quirky ingredients. BLACKETT STREET WEEKENDS

Funky furniture, family zones and fairground rides will take over Blackett Street for six weeks of summer fun throughout July, August and September - thanks to Team NE1! Go here this weekend for guaranteed good times by Grey’s Monument. It’s the perfect city centre spot to soak up the sun and really make the most of the school summer holidays in the heart of NE1. We’re waving goodbye to the busy traffic and saying hello to chill-out spaces, quirky seating areas with bean bags, deck chairs and an artificial grass sofa.
FOODIE FUN AT FENWICK

Fenwick is set to showcase the North’s flag-waving food and drink this summer, hosting a series of bespoke events in celebration of Great Exhibition of the North. Bringing some of the region’s best producers, brands and chefs to the fore, the department store will serve up a mouth-watering programme of events, happening throughout July ’til September.
