Be inspired by art and innovation this summer as the Great Exhibition of the North comes to town! Three interconnected trails will guide visitors through 30 world-class venues and public spaces in the city, showcasing the work and talent of the North. GET NORTH WATER SCULPTURE

The Quayside is going big this summer. And when we say big we mean it. Look out for the UK’s largest water sculpture swooping into position in the middle of the Tyne. Stroll along the Quayside and enjoy an hourly water show every day from 10am – 11pm. The spectacular feature will play to three specially commissioned soundtracks available to download. After dark, a stunning light display will add to the experience.

WHICH WAY NORTH

A portal to another world is about to open at the Great North Museum! Prepare for one of the biggest and best adventures of your lives and discover the heart and soul of the revolutionary North; learning how its inventors, scientists and artists shaped the world we live in today! Which Way North is a family-friendly exhibition featuring more than 200 fascinating items on loan from the UK’s leading museums, galleries and private collections. Inspiring pieces displayed include: a rare miniature book by Charlotte Brontë, the last piano played by John Lennon, David Hockney’s painting Le Parc des Sources, Vichy, Astronaut Helen Sharman’s space suit and many more!

Our pals at World HQ are teaming up with the Great Exhibition of the North this June (Friday 29) to celebrate their 25 year anniversary in Newcastle, with a breathtaking live show at Sage Gateshead. The ‘Voices of Virtue Choir’ will perform alongside DJ Tom Caulker for an evening of blistering soul anthems we all know and love!

ROBOTS – THEN AND NOW

The Life Science Centre is taking visitors on a journey into humanity’s 500-year obsession with robots this summer in an intriguing exhibition. This on-going quest to reimagine ourselves as machines is truly fascinating and will take exhibition-goers from 16th century mechanical automatons, to some unsettling humanoids that will make you question what it means to be human.

REMAKE A TAKE

Make sure you get down to the Discovery Museum to step inside the movies linked with the North. From Blade Runner to Brief Encounter, our region has inspired generations upon generations of audiences and filmmakers. Go behind the scenes this summer with a whole host of hands-on activities based around these famous films. As part of the Great Exhibition of the North, visitors are invited to follow the ‘Remake a Take’ trail to hunt out a series of interactive film stills featuring scenes from the likes of Billy Elliot, Get Carter and many more.
