January has already been a fun-filled month in NE1 but with February hot on our heels it’s time to check out some of the events on their way to our city. If you are up for a fantastic February and a mint March then book up these events now. Pen out, diaries at the ready . . .

HEDDA GABLER

13-17 FEBRUARY

Head to the Theatre Royal for the gritty and invigorating production of Hedda Gabler. Join newlyweds Hedda and Tesman as they return home from their honeymoon with cracks already breaking in their new relationship. Watch the world around them unravel in this thrilling masterpiece by Olivier Award-winning playwright Patrick Marber and Tony Award winner director

CHINESE NEW YEAR 

18 FEBRUARY

Celebrate the ‘Year of the Dog’ this February as the stunning parade returns to NE1 including: dragon and unicorn dances, a traditional lion, flag wavers, themed floats and inspiring drumming. NE1 are rounding up 50 lucky volunteers to take part in the parade as individuals or as a group. Costumes and training will be provided prior to the parade that will weave through the city on Sunday 18th February following the New Year celebrations on Friday 16th. There are no age restrictions or requirements - just come along and enjoy the glittering parade as part of the drumming or dancing troupes.

MICHAEL GIRA (SWANS) / OKKYUNG LEE

20 FEBRUARY

Michael Gira of Swans is in the North East this February as part of his solo tour. He’ll be at Boiler Shop on 20 February - alone on stage with ‘a dead piece of wood and some wires’ after challenging himself to go solo years ago. He plays the guitar his own way and he’s set to arrive with new material for the next phase of Swans. A must-see show with support from Okkyung Lee.

AN EVENING WITH KEVIN KEEGAN

28 FEBRUARY

Sit back and relax as Grosvenor Casino Newcastle presents An Evening with Kevin Keegan. Listen to some fabulous tales as Kevin recalls his most memorable moments at the club. PALOMA FAITH

The sensational Paloma Faith will be performing her new album, The Architect at the Metro Radio Arena this March. Stereophonics

12 MARCH

Get ready for an evening with one of Britain’s best live bands, the Stereophonics. Join them as they perform their eagerly anticipated tenth studio album to a lively North East audience. ‘Scream Above The Sounds’ was primarily recorded in the band’s HQ in West London with a further session at RAK Studios. Created with the help of regular collaborator, Jim Lowe, it’s an album in which creative sonic touches add to the band’s emphasis on songwriting and melody. THE JUNGLE BOOK

27-31 MARCH

Go on an unforgettable journey to the jungle with Mowgli as he battles for survival alongside his trusty friends Bagheera the panther, Baloo the bear and Kaa the python. A lovely coming-of-age tale about friendship, belonging and identity for all the family to enjoy. The Rudyard Kipling family classic adapted by Olivier Award-winning Jessica Swale, features live music on stage created by Joe Stilgoe and is directed by Max Webster. With brilliant storytelling, a colourful stage set and a beautiful story, the show is set to be hit!

THE FRATELLIS

30 MARCH

Get ready for an epic mix of old favourites such as Chelsea Dagger and Henrietta combined with the new sounds of modern anthems from the Scottish trio. MAKER FAIRE UK 2018

28 – 29 APRIL

Maker Faire UK will be back at the Life Science Centre this April and it’s a must on your social calendar! New to Maker Faire? Think of it as the greatest show and tell on the planet. It’s a two-day family-friendly festival showcasing some of the greatest inventions and creative makers out there with over 300 inspiring people to chat to. Visitors will get the chance to explore new installations, pick up top tips from crafts people and find out just how the wonderful world of science and technology works from an inventor’s perspective. Round up the troops and spend a day at this inspiring show! Adults £8, children aged 5-7 £6, children aged 4 and under go free.
