'Lazarus Style' pop-up art experience

‘Lazarus Style’ - A night with Mysterious Al.

Thursday 20th June, 2019 - Lime St, Ouseburn, Newcastle Upon Tyne.

In the momentum of his breakthrough solo show ‘Blinking into the Sunlight’, Mysterious Al returns to the UK with ‘Lazarus Style’ - A pop-up art experience in a derelict building in Newcastle.

Rising to fame in the early 2000s in the UK, with the emergence of street-art along with the likes of Banksy, D*Face and Word to Mother, Mysterious Al has been commissioned to create works for the likes of Vans, Yahoo!, Carhartt, Volvo and Levi’s, even creating custom designed shoes with Adidas.

Al’s work changed dramatically from his street-art beginnings. His vibrant, high-energy ‘mask’ paintings were born from an epiphany at a London museum five years ago:

I was desperate for a piss so popped into the museum to find a toilet. I went the wrong way and ended up in a room full of African masks. These crazy dudes were simple and crudely made yet they had so much character and expression. It was a time in my life when I was feeling lost and trapped within my work, and the vibe of these masks gave me a newfound energy. I made my first mask painting that night.” - Says Al.

His first UK exhibition in 3 years will showcase 12 new works in an experience of darkness, light and colour, housed within an abandoned ouseburn space. Formerly Backyard Bikes on Lime Street, opposite Seven Stories.

Al’s recent solo show in Melbourne was a best seller, attracting 1300+ people through the doors over a single weekend. Collectors old and new queued for over an hour to secure a piece as the artists profile exploded. ‘Lazarus Style’ will be an unmissable experience.

“This is big for us, whilst we’ve been busy behind closed doors we’ve not had a show here in Newcastle for well over 12 months. Al has been a contact of the galleries since inception, it just so happened that the stars aligned for this project. And we jumped at the opportunity to work with such an internationally regarded conceptual artist.” Danny Hughes, gallery curator.
