Big Bake Day

Cake-creators, loaf-lovers and baking buffs of the North East are dusting off their aprons once again this year to take part in Cash for Kids Big Bake Day on Friday 18 September. Following the success of last year’s event, schools, workplaces, offices and shops are warming their ovens in anticipation of raising a lot of money for local disadvantaged children. From cupcakes to pies, shortbread to snickerdoodles, adults and children alike are getting in on the act by signing up to create their own masterpieces. Whether it’s a spectacular showstopper or a soggy bottomed bake doesn’t really matter as its all for fun and all for a good cause. St. Gabriels Nursery in Heaton is just one of the supporters taking part. Vanessa Hirst, floor manager commented: “We have stay-and-play baking sessions planned with parents and children, messy play, cake-baking competition, mud-pie making, raffle, tombola and the team managers will be subjected to cream-pie throwing competition! “We raised £350 last year and hope to raise much more this year.” Other Big Bake Day supporters include Virgin Media in Gateshead who are holding a back-to-school themed bake day with a special breakfast and old fashioned desserts on sale through the day. Zenith People and Rising Stars from South Shields are holding a cake bake competition and charging an entry fee while staff from B & M Stores across the region are baking cakes and selling to customers. Debbie Craig, Cash for Kids said: “It really doesn’t matter how big or small your bake day is, it’s just a fun event to get involved in. We have individuals organising girls nights in and selling cakes, or families baking and selling to friend and neighbours, all the way through to large call centres. “It’s something everyone can have a go at and every penny raised stays right here in the North East to help disabled and disadvantaged children.” To register your workplace or school for Big Bake Day go to metroradio.co.uk/bake
